Abstract

Inference on value for cultivation and use (VCU) of new varieties is usually based on results of series of trials performed in different environments (trial stations, locations). The size of series (number of locations) depends on economic importance of species and varies (in Poland) from very few trials for less important species to several dozens for the most important ones. Transformations in Poland during last twenty years caused also changes in official variety testing. Among the results of changes is reduction of the number of trial stations and reduction of size of series of trials performed for VCU purposes for practically all species. How this reduction can influence the results of series of trials and – indirectly – the conclusions on varieties is shown using results of extensive series of trials on winter wheat performed in the year 1991.
