Abstract

For obtention of best possible hybrids through crossing of inbred lines a good choice of parent partners is necessary. To limit the extent of crossing procedures, the lines should be well known with respect to origin, affinity, combining abilities as well as the values of usefulness and technological ones. The research material was composed of 120 winter rye lines of different origin and degree of inbreeding. In order to differentiate the inbred lines and categorize them into homogeneous groups, variation analyses were performed for the quantitative traits studied. Then the traits were tested with the use of the Haufe-Geidel method, and a cluster analysis by the Ward method was carried out. The variation analysis and the Haufe-Geidel test enabled to divide the collection of 120 lines into several separate homogeneous groups of different breeding value. Five homogeneous groups were created for the number of grains from an ear, four - both for plant height and weight of grain from an ear, and three — for the remaining traits. Hierarchic classification of six traits allowed to distinguish 57 groups, and 9 groups according to the breeding value indices: from the best having 8, 9 and 10 points to the worst with 14, 15 and 17 points. Application of one index for evaluation of a number of traits makes the choice of line more objective. Cluster analysis of the lines following the Ward method indicates strong interline differentiation. Almost every line from the collection constitutes a distinct homogeneous group.
