Abstract
Grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is cultivated in Poland (Podlasie and adjacent regions) since 200 years. Although this pulse crop is characterized by high protein content (26-34%) and unique resistance against abiotic stresses, grasspea plays a marginal role in Polish agriculture. This indicates, among others, the necessity of genetic improvement of this crop to make grasspea more competitive as compared to others pulse crops. A local population of grasspea present in the Podlasie region since many years is characterized by narrow gene pool which limits effective selection in breeding works leading to release improved cultivars. Recombination but mainly induced mutations may enrich the existing grasspea materials with an additional variability of traits important in agriculture. As a result of mutagenic treatment of seeds of two Polish cultivars: Derek and Krab (derived from a local Podlasie population) with chemomutagens, in M2 progeny many changed plants were selected. After propagation of obtained lines in next generation, part of them constituted initial material for field trials conducted in 2004–2006. The aim of this work was an estimation of quantitative traits variations of mutants in comparison to initial cultivars. The results obtained from field trials were analyzed with a use of multivariate statistics. The two-way analysis of variance was carried out to determine the effects of objects, years and objects years interaction on the variability of observed phenotypic traits. The mean values and coefficient of variation were estimated. For jointly analyzed results from all years, the highest coefficients of variation were obtained for plant height, number of pods per plant, number and seed weight per plant and 1000 seed weight, and the lowest for flowering times, seeds number per pod and length and broad of pod. The values of contrast in comparisons between initial cultivars (control) and mutants in the most cases were positive which indicated higher values of traits for cultivars. Based on Mahalnobis distances the similarity of particular forms in comparison to cultivars for all traits together were estimated. The forms with highest and lowest similarity to cultivars were distinguished. Part of them, characterized by desirable traits from breeding point of view, can constitute a valuable initial material for further work on genetic improvement of domestic grasspea.
