Abstract
The paper presents results of theoretical and experimental studies on statistical methodology of evaluation of wide adaptation degree of cultivars. The aim of the theoretical study was to present a conceptual framework of wide adaptation degree of cultivars and to develop some new statistical measures as well as describe standard statistical measures of wide adaptation degree including the order Kang’s measure, YSi, and genotypic mean yield. Additionally, the purpose of experimental study was and assess usefulness of the measures as criteria for selecting cultivars showing relatively high degree of wide adaptation. The experimental study was performed using data for grain yield obtained in three pre-registration cultivar trials with winter wheat in the years 1994, 2000 and 2006. It was found that the new measures as yield reliability index, Ri(0), mean value of yield reliability function, MRi, evaluate most adequately, among the considered ones, degree of cultivars’ wide adaptation. The order Kang’s measure, YSi, also well reflected wide adaptation degree of cultivars because it ordered them similarly to the measures Ri(d = 0) and MRi in a set of all studied cultivars and those highest yielding ones. Genotypic mean yield was worse measure of wide adaptation degree of those cultivars in the set of highest yielding ones because of ranking different from that for the measures Ri(d = 0) and MRi.
