Abstract

A field experiment with two spring barley cultivars (Rasbet — with hulled grain and Rastik with hulless grain) was conducted at the Experimental Station of Warsaw Agricultural University in Chylice in the years 1999–2002. Correlation coefficient analysis and path coefficients analysis was applied for evaluation of grain yield determination by its components. The results prove the highest direct effect of number of pikes per 1 m2 on grain yield for both cultivars. Path coefficient was equal to 0.909 for Rastik (with hulless grain) and was higher than for Rasbet (0.788). The other two components had small influence on grain yield for both cultivars. Slightly smaller effect was caused by number of kernels per spike, compared with the effect of weight of thousand grains. Values of path coefficients for number of kernels per spike were similar for both cultivars and were equal to 0.537 and 0.494 (Rasbet and Rastik respectively) and for weight of thousand grains 0.441 and 0.442 (respectively for Rasbet and Rastik). Indirect effects of yield components were relatively small, but slightly higher for the hulless cultivar.
