Abstract
Nineteen isolates of bacteria were detected in potato tubers infected with Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus (Cms). Cross-reactions of the isolates with polyclonal antibodies applied in the IFAS test were observed. Seven isolates were morphologically similar to Cms. The occurrence of cross-reactions can lead to obtaining false positive readings in the routine tests. Biochemical and physiological methods used to analyze the 19 cross-reacting isolates made possible to distinguish them from Cms strains. A biological assay on eggplant with the use of inoculum containing pure bacteria cultures was also performed. None of the cross-reacting isolates was found pathogenic to this plant.
