Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of accompanying species and nitrogen fertilization on the rate of photosynthesis and transpiration, water use efficiency and leaf greenness values of Lotus corniculatus L. grown in mixtures with Festulolium or Festuca pratensis L. under variable weather conditions. A field experiment was conducted over 2004–2006. The exact field experiment was established in a randomized split-plot design, in four replications, at the Experimental Station in Tomaszkowo, province Warmia and Mazury. It was found that under conditions of rainfall deficiency Lotus corniculatus grown in mixture with Festulolium was characterized by a significantly higher rate of photosynthesis, a lower rate of transpiration and higher water use efficiency, compared to Lotus corniculatus grown in mixture with Festuca pratensis; however, the former accumulated less chlorophyll in leaves. Nitrogen fertilization affected the investigated parameters to a greater degree when Lotus corniculatus was grown with Festulolium than when it was grown with Festuca pratensis.
