Abstract
The analysis concerned the offspring of 6 inbred lines of maize (different for each year) crossed with 8 testers using factorial design (North Carolina Design II). Four flint type and four dent type testers were applied. The experiments were carried in two successive years using incomplete block design with two replications. During the plants vegetation data were recorded for: resistance to tillering (in 9° scale), plants uninfected by smut and erect plants before harvest (both values in Bliss degrees). After harvest dry matter content of grain and grain yield from plot were assessed. Analyses of general and specific combining ability were done and their effects were estimated. The combining ability was assessed separately for flint type and dent type testers, with 4, 3 and 2 testers in a group, eliminating successively the weakest testers. Analysis of the cost of testing and the amount of information obtained on the tested lines showed that the design with 3 testers is likely to be optimal. The advantage of additive gene action over non-additive one was found for the majority of traits studied. K154, K296 and K376 lines from flint type testers, and K182 and S335 lines from dent type testers appeared to be most valuable.
