Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate sowing value including vigour test of cereal seeds produced under organic system. Additionally, the effects of natural seed treatment on seed sowing value, vigour parameters and field emergence were tested. Seeds of spring barley, oats and wheat from the harvests of 2004, 2005 and 2006 constituted the experimental material. Seed lots derived from the field classified by the authorized inspector as a C/1 organic seed. The seeds were either treated with hot water (Gw), with powder milk (M), with water suspension of garlic (Cz), or soaked for 24 hours in 10% solution of bicarbonate natrium (S). Untreated seeds were control variant (K). Tests for evaluating seed germination capacity and vigour were performed according to the methods recommended by ISTA. Vigour of seeds was evaluated at optimum temperature of 20°C (like in the case of germination capacity test) or at temperature lowered to 10°C. Moreover, field emergence was assessed in the spring time. Germination capacity required for classifying as certified seed was recorded for 56, 78 and 67% of seeds from the crops of 2004, 2005 and 2006, respectively. The best pre-sowing seed treatment variant was water suspension of garlic (Cz), which was seen in the results of the vigour test. Both, hot water and soaking in bicarbonate natrium were found to decrease germination capacity and vigour of seeds, following by their poorer field emergence. However, none of the applied seed treatment methods resulted in the expected improvement in sowing value of the seeds under study.
