Abstract
The responses of 5 new cultivars of spring wheat to increasing nitrogen rates (1.2, 2.4 and 3.6 g N/pot) were investigated in the years 2005 and 2006 using Mitscherlich pots. The cultivars exhibited various reaction to the rates of nitrogen applied. In 2005, cultivars Bombona and Partyzan as well as strain NAD 403 showed significant increase in grain yield at the rate of 2.4 g N/pot, whereas the marked increase in the yield of cv. Raweta was recorded at 3.6 g N/pot. In 2006, the positive effect of fertilization on the yield of cvs Bombona, Raweta and Partyzan was observed at 2.4 g N/pot, while the highest yield of cv. Hewilla was obtained at 3.6 g N/pot. Apart from the amount, also yield quality depended on the rates of nitrogen fertilization. The increase in N rate to 3.6 g per pot resulted in the higher content of total protein and gluten in cvs Bombona, Raweta, Partyzan and Hewilla. With wheat strain NAD 403, significant increase in the content of these components was recorded at 2.4 g N/pot. The gluten and sedimentation indices were found to decrease with increasing rates of N per pot. The activity of amylolitic enzymes remained at a stable level, irrespective of the nitrogen rate applied.
