Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of seed treatment on sowing value of spring barley. Barley seeds of two brewing type cultivars (Rasbet and Scarlett) and three fodders type ones (Rataj, Rodion and Rastik), harvested in 1999–2001, were examined. The seeds were treated with the fungicides tebuconazole (Raxil) or carboxin + thiuram (Vitavax). Seed health, germination capacity and vigour were evaluated in the laboratory tests. Barley seeds were contaminated by numerous species of fungi. Among them the saprotrophic fungi: Alternaria alternata, Penicillium spp., Mucor spp. and the pathogens: Bipolaris sorokiniana and Fusarium spp. were most often observed. The study has shown that seed treatment reduced the occurrence of microorganisms, especially Bipolaris sorokiniana. Germination capacity and vigour depended on seed treatment and cultivars. The highest germination and vigour were observed when Vitavax was used to seed treatment.
