Abstract

Results of the three-year analysis done to characterize the potential for yield formation within the plant and the spike of androgenetic doubled haploid spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) lines (DH lines) are presented. A rate of utilization of the yield-forming potential expressed as grain yield per spike and per plant was also estimated. The DH lines were derived from spring barley cv. Scarlett, which was used as a control object in the investigations. The yield-forming potential of plant was determined by the total number of tillers per plant, and that of spike was determined by the total number of spikelets per spike. Analyses of the following morphological plant traits: number of stems per plant, number of productive tillers per plant and number of unmatured tillers per plant investigated at the ripening stage showed no significant differences between the DH lines and cv. Scarlett. The yield-forming plant potential in DH lines and in the control cultivar was utilized in 60 per cent in 2004 and in 81 to 83 per cent in the years 2007 and 2008. Morphological features of spike, such as its length, total number of spikelets, number of fertile spikelets and number of grains at the ripening phase were more favourable for creating the yield in the DH lines than in cv. Scarlett. Spikes of the DH plants, compared to those in the control cultivar, were significantly longer, contained greater by 8 per cent number of spikelets and greater by 10 per cent number of fertile spikelets, as well as greater by 10 per cent number of grains. The yield-forming potential of the spike in DH lines was utilized in 76 per cent in 2007 and in 87 to 88 per cent in the years 2004 and 2008, and in cv. Scarlett in 94.5 per cent in 2004, 55 per cent in 2007 and 85.5 per cent in 2008. The grain yield per spike in the DH plants amounted 1.16 g and was higher by 27.5 per cent (significant difference) than that in cv. Scarlett. The difference resulted from the greater by 11 per cent number of grains per spike and from the greater by 14.7 per cent average weight of one grain. The grain yield per DH plant reached 9.65 g and was higher by 47.6 per cent (significant difference) than that in cv. Scarlett, mainly due to the higher grain yield per spike. The yield of grain per plant was found to be positively correlated with the number of productive tillers per plant (r = 0.93), both in DH plants and in cv. Scarlett.
