Abstract

Winter wheat breeding scheme applied in the Strzelce plant breeding station (current: Hodowla Roślin Strzelce) in the years 1992–1999 has been described. During this period, weight and number of kernels per spike were used as selection criteria in the F4 generation. Assessment of effectiveness of this selection was the main purpose of the study. Starting point for the elaboration was choice of 61 advanced breeding lines from the inter-station trials of the years 1994 and 1995, followed by tracing them back to the F4 generation (1991–1992) and tracing forth to the pre-registration two-steps experiments. In the initial generation (F4), kernels weight per spike (KWS) varied from 2.1 to 3.4 g and number of kernels per spike (KNS) ranged from 39 to 60. Thousand kernels weight (TKW) extreme values were 39 and 71 g. The lowest variation, expressed as the variation coefficient, was recorded for the TKW. Yielding of the selected strains is also presented, in relation to the obligatory standards. Correlation coefficients between yield level and the studied indices have been calculated, as well as those between the indices, for the most successful cross combination C9. The highest correlation was recorded between the KNS and KWS, lower for the TKW and KNS. Values of correlation coefficients between the yields in trials and the analyzed yield components differed depending on a vegetation season. It is worth to emphasize, that we bred from this material four winter wheat cultivars: Zyta (registered in 1999), Sukces, Tonacja and Nutka (registered in 2001).
