Abstract
Two factorial experiments were performed to evaluate genotype and nutrition effects on the variation in the water, nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies, total size and penetration depth of the root system and tolerance to reduced NPK nutrition. The investigation was performed at the vegetative and reproductive growth stages among wild, primitive and cultivated tetraploid wheats. Measurements performed at the 4-leaf and full maturity growth stages revealed genotypically specific responses to the nutrient shortages. The limited nutrient supply caused considerable reductions in indices of nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies at the 4-leaf growth stage. However, at maturity, there was a decrease of the index of phosphorus use efficiency for grain yield and increase of the index of phosphorus use efficiency for vegetative mass formation. The obtained results suggest a positive correlation between total size of the root system and index of nitrogen use efficiency under reduced nutrition at the juvenile growth stage. However, no close associations were noticed between indices of nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies and stress tolerance. The results indicated complex pattern of wheat’s response to limitation of nutrients.
