Abstract
In the experiment conducted in the years 2005–2008 at the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute, division Jadwisin, the development potential of potato plants depending on their origin and tuber size was assessed. Eight Polish and eight foreign cultivars were tested. The foreign cultivars, compared to the Polish ones, exhibited a pattern of plant development that enabled reaching high tuber yield. Namely, despite the greater number of eyes on seed tubers of a comparable size, the plants produced by tubers of foreign cultivars were characterized by a comparatively smaller number of stems. This resulted in producing a smaller number of progeny tubers, but more uniform in size. It was also found that the tuber productivity per stem was higher when relatively small seed potatoes were planted. Therefore, it is more profitable to plant smaller tubers in higher density rather than big tubers in low density.
