Abstract
The investigations on potato cultivars grown using two different production systems: organic and integrated, and cultivated on two different types of soil: light and heavier, were carried out in the years 2002–2004. The aim of the experiment was to assess the biomass and diversity of weeds depending on the tested factors. The highest level of weed infestation and the greatest variety of weed species were recorded at the organic system of potato production on heavier soil. The lowest weed biomass characterized the integrated production system. Differences between potato cultivars in the rate of weed infestation were found. The biomass of weeds infesting late or mid-late potato cultivars that produce high mass of foliage was much lower than that of weeds accompanying earlier cultivars. Rate of weed infestation was also found to be year-dependent. The highest biomass of weeds was recorded in the wet year 2004, irrespective of the production system applied and the type of soil.
