Abstract

Different methods of pre-planting treatment of seed potato tubers were compared in the investigations carried out on two potato cultivars in the years 2005–2007: (i) presprouting in light at 15°C for 4 wks, (ii) maintenance of seed tubers at 22°C for 7 days in darkness followed by exposure of the tubers to 15°C in light — the treatment resulting in thermal shock, and (iii) control variant — tubers not treated. Variable temperatures and exposure of tubers to darkness and light were applied to reach the maximum sprouting capacity of tubers, which effected in the production of numerous stems, and — in consequence — in increasing the number of progeny tubers from one plant. The treatment was found to influence the yield structure, but the effects were not statistically significant.
