Abstract

Microtuberization is the process which leads to obtaining potato tubers under in vitro conditions. The tubers are very small (up to 10 mm in diameter and 0.7g of weight). To produce microtubers single-node cuttings are used. Several chemical and physical factors are applied to enhance microtuberization. Single-node explants produce one or more healthy tubers. The tubers are used for germplasm storage, and their small size and a possibility to store them in the dark for a long time make their transport easier. Since, in vitro cultures are maintained in controlled conditions, it is possible to change one or more tuberization factors and to examine the interactions between these factors. Optimalization of culture conditions can lead to medium simplification and reduction of costs.
