Laboratory reduction of submitted samples - comparison of the efficiency of three mechanical and three hand methods of reduction

Abstract
The author presents the numerical results of submitted sample reduction carried by means of three mechanical methods: the small size Boerner divider, the 12 and 8 channel soil dividers, and three hand methods: the rounded spoon, the spatula, and the ISTA 1976 spoon method.
Were carried out repeated reductions of synthetic samples of four blends, which had as main components the seeds of the following species: blend A - Phleum pratense, blends B and C - Trifolium pratense, blend D - Lolium perenne. The indicator seeds added in amounts representing three levels of impurities consisted of seeds: in blend A Lolium perenne, blend B - Phleum pratense, blend c - Rumex acetosa, blend D - Phleum pratense.
Comparatively the best efficiency of reduction was attained when the 12 channel soil divider was used. Second came the 8 channel model and the ISTA 1976 spoon method, third - the Boerner divider. The rounded spoon and the spatula methods were totally inadcquate.
The statistical analisis using the Chi-square computations and the caluntion of differences of individual expected and obtained results compared with the tolerances given in the ISTA Handbook of Miles, showed that the laboratory reduction by all methods is still subject to an exessive variation. The reduction of the blends A and D, representing mixtures of components differing maximally as to the shape and size lead to a too great dispersion of individual results evcn when the reduction was done bv means of the 12 channel soil divider.
The results of the investigations show that laboratory reduction methods need still to be improved, chiefly when the samples to be divided have components of different size and other characteristices. For comparatively homogenous mixtures, containing components relatively equal in size and shape the reduction by means of the 12 or 8 channel dividers, or of the ISTA spoon method is quite satisfactory.
