Abstract

The aim of the studies was to determine the conditions, and the influence of the time of storage of winter wheat and rye seed planned to be used as governmental seed reserves.
Wheat and rye seed harvested in 1974 and 1975 was stored for two and one year and then sown in plots, arranged according to a completely randomized block design.
It was proved that the conditions of storage did not affect the yield of two wheat cultivars, Kaukaz and Grana, however their germination capacity was reduced. Storage in bags exerted an unfavorable influence on germination. The seed of the Kaukaz cv. of 14.1% and 14.7% moisture, stored in air-tight metal containers had after storage a considerably lower germination capacity. An increased seeding rate of the seed stored compensated for the lowered germination capacity and yields as high could be obtained as when seed of high germination capacity would be used. Such procedure requires however the use of a greater quantity of seed material.
Rye seed was more susceptible of storage conditions and underwent a greater loss of germination capacity or its considerable reduction. Rye seed of the cultivar Dańkowskie Selekcyjne having a reduced germination capacity sown at a higher seeding rate gave lower yields when compared with results from control plots. The yield of the cultivar Dańkowskie Złote did not differ significantly from controls yield. The results of the experiments have shown that a two-year storage of rye seed is not advisable.
