Differentiation of flowering biology among species of rye in the genus Secale

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to characterize the flowering of different species in the genus Secale. Good knowledge of blooming biology is needed for making distant crosses because synchronization of flowering is important for proper performance of the treatment. Investigations were carried out on eleven wild rye species coming from Europe and Middle Asia, and on a cultivated species Secale cereale ssp. cereale, cultivar Walet. The following elements of flowering were compared: structure of inflorescences (morphological structure of spikelets, ear length, spikelet number per ear, ear density), viability of pollen, flowering dates and level of self-incompatibility in species. All the species and subspecies under study were found to have the same morphological structure and to differ significantly in ear length, number of spikelets per ear and ear density. In the year of investigations the duration of flowering in Secale species was largely extended and it lasted from 18 May till 16 June. The species Secale silvestre and Secale strictum ssp. africanum set seeds in the self-pollination process. The other species and subspecies, being self-incompatible ones, did not bind grains in this process.
