Abstract

Experiments with 20 Triticum durum Desf. lines selected from several crossbreeding combinations were carried out in the years 2002–2005. The experiment was set in the Experiment Farm Czesławice near Nałęczów, in randomized blocks design in three replications. Each plot was of 2 m2 area. Common wheat (Torka cv.) was the standard. The following traits were observed and measured: disease infestation, resistance to lodging, vegetation period length, plant height, rachis length, number of spikelets in ear, ear density, number and weight of grains per ear, 1000 grain weight, test weight and total protein content in grain. The data were statistically processed by means of variance analysis, and the least significant differences were calculated using Tukey’s test at the significance level  = 0.05. Phenotypic variability coefficients and correlation coefficients between the analyzed quantitative traits were also calculated. A remarkable differentiation of the studied lines in reference to the analyzed traits was observed. The durum wheat lines were distinguished by shorter vegetation period, shorter and denser ear, as well as lower number of grains per ear as compared to common wheat. Majority of studied lines had higher weight of grains per ear, higher 1000 grain weight, and higher protein content in grain than the Torka cv. for all T. durum lines yield per 1 m2 was significantly lower than that of the standard; however, three lines achieved quite satisfactory grain yields (70% of Torka cv.). Grain yield was significantly positively correlated only with ear density and grain weight per ear. Correlations with other traits appeared to be insignificant.
