Abstract
In the process of breeding of self-fertilizing plants one can consider three elements: selection of initial materials, breeding methods and evaluation of lines with respect to their economic value. The relatively small genetic diversity of registered varieties observed in the European countries shows their great similarity. This is confirmed in many papers, in which, using the molecular techniques, the variability of varieties of different species was analyzed. The plant breeding methods used by breeders across Europe are much alike too. One can conclude that the success in plant breeding depends, to a considerable degree, on the methods of evaluation of lines, which enable selection of the best objects. Halfway through the process of self-fertilizing plant breeding, at the sixth generation level, the first step of testing of lines with respect to their economic value is realized. These tests, because of a large number of objects, are carried out in one place with one replication with one or two standard varieties, on plots of size from 5 m2 to 10 m2.
