Abstract
A phenotypic variation and interrelationships between 51 genotypes (cultivars and clones) from the winter wheat working collection maintained at the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute, Department of Cereal Crops in Cracow, were assessed. Yield structure traits and susceptibility to the most important winter wheat diseases were evaluated during 4-year investigations carried out in the years 1999 to 2002. The input data were arranged in an incomplete two-way genotype × year classification. Variance components were estimated separately for each trait by REML method for a random model of the two-way classification. Coefficients of heritability for the four-year phenotypic means were estimated on the basis of variance components. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients and their standard errors were estimated. The VARCOMP procedure and Multivariate REML option of MIXED procedure of the SAS package were used for all computing. The genotypic variance components and variance components of the year effects appeared to be significant for the examined traits. The repeatability coefficients were higher than 0.7 for all the traits except a falling number. The pairs of traits which were correlated at the phenotypic level were also correlated at the genotypic one. The absolute values for genotypic correlation coefficients were mostly much higher than those for the phenotypic ones.
