Abstract

In the years 2001–2002, the breeding experiment with ryegrass was carried out. Seed yield and yield-related traits of plants for 59 advanced ryegrass lines were evaluated. The experimental data were analyzed statistically (e.g. using path analysis) to evaluate the determination of seed yield by examined yield-related traits. The effects of a number of fertile stems per plant and seed weight per spike on seed yield per plant were found similar (values of path coefficients were, respectively, equal to 0.453 and 0.449). The effect of a number of seeds per spike on weight of seeds per spike was quite strong, but that of 1000-grain weight was relatively weak (values of path coefficients were, respectively, equal to 1.003 and 0.429). The compensation between 1000-grain weight and a number of seeds per spike was found.
