Studies on resistance of maize to fusarium stalk rot. Part I. Evaluation of susceptibility of hybrid cultivars under natural infection

Abstract
The aim of the study was the evaluation of susceptibility of maize hybrid cultivars registered in Poland and experimental hybrids to natural infection with stalk rot. Moreover, factors inducing changes in severity of the disease were determined. The evaluation was performed in the years 1985–1990 and 2002–2006 at Radzików. In each year 36–150 genotypes were examined. The Krüger’s method for longitudinal cutting of the stalks and the scale 1–9 elaborated by the FAO group were applied to measure infection rates. The hybrid cultivars differed in the susceptibility to stalk rot. The early cultivars, compared to the late ones, appeared to be more susceptible to infection. The level of plant susceptibility to disease was greatly influenced by environmental conditions. The infection rates varied in the years of the study, and depended on: weather conditions, date of maize flowering and date of the appearance of first disease symptoms. Early flowering predisposed the plants to early stalk infection, which resulted in heavy lodging of plants at the time of cobs harvesting. The evaluation of plant susceptibility performed under high pressure of the disease gives the most reliable screening. The cultivars Cyrkon, Grom, Król, Iman, Blask, Glejt and Boruta were found to be moderately susceptible to stalk rot, whereas the cultivars Wilga, Duet, Wiarus, Bułat and Fido are highly susceptible.
