Abstract
In the years 2004 and 2005, twenty nine cultivars and units of breeding materials were evaluated: 16 European Italian ryegrass cultivars (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), 3 hybrid ryegrass (Lolium bouchenanum Kurth) cultivars and Polish materials of Italian ryegrass: 2 cultivars (Gisel and Kroto), 2 strains and 6 progenies of F3 filial generation. Morphological and physiological characters connected with agronomic value were described. The material was differentiated in crown rust resistance in July, August and September, as well as in plant height, estimated green mass yield, performance after winter and early spring regeneration ability. Using the factor analysis method it was possible to divide 12 variables (the evaluated characters) into 3 principal components representing agronomic value of the tested materials and to determine relationships between them. Estimated green mass production was significantly correlated with leaf width and plant height. The Polish cultivars, strains and F3 progenies showed low crown rust resistance but high regeneration after winter. Most of the tetraploid European Italian ryegrass cultivars showed high estimated green mass production and high crown rust resistance. Especially promising were Tonyl, Domino and Tarandus which showed good regeneration after winter. All diploid European cultivars had low estimates of green mass production and weak regeneration after winter.
