Abstract

In 2003–2006 we evaluated male fertility of winter triticale F1 hybrids obtained from crossing male sterile lines (T. timopheevi cytoplasm) with 169 cultivars and breeding strains, 52 DH lines from 6 cultivars and lines, and 203 DH lines derived from 24 F1 hybrids (non-restoring form × cultivar/strain). Eight cultivars and strains (4.7%) fully restored male fertility in hybrids, a half of them (52%) exhibited the restoration index of 80–100%. Among the DH lines from partially restoring cultivars and strains one line (1.9%) fully restored fertility and the majority showed restoration index over 40%. In these first two groups of the investigated material no sterility maintaining lines were identified. However, nineteen maintaining type DH lines (9.4%) were obtained from the F1 hybrids. A half of the DH lines (50.7%) showed restoration index below 40% and 3 lines (1.5%) fully restored fertility. An interaction of male sterile line × restorer was observed with regard to fertility restoration.
