Abstract
A rate of losses in potato tubers stored in bulk in a storehouse supplied with a humidification system was compared with that recorded for tubers kept in a storehouse without such a system. In both storehouses the tubers were stored for a long time at 8C, with a ventilation system working, on average, for 5 hours a day. Water vapour pressure deficit (WVPD) in the storehouse with a humidification system was smaller than that in the storehouse without humidification. Natural losses in tubers kept in the storehouse with humidification were lower than those in tubers kept in the storehouse without a humidification system (4.0% and 4.9%, respectively). In both storehouses the losses (c. 0.5%) caused by diseases (soft rot) occurred in the upper part of the pile only. These were slightly greater in the humidified storehouse.
