Abstract

The deterrmination of germinability, using methods in which the seeds are actually germination is not possible in tests of winter wheat seed examinated directly after harvest, without spccial treatments needed to remove the post harvest dormancy of the seed.
To the purpose of finding an improved method giving correct results in the shortest time, experiments were carried out on technologically mature seeds of winter wheat, cvs. Grana and Kaukaz. The seeds were collected on the day of combine harvesting in the farms and tested one day latter. A good efficacy of gibberelin treatment was found, gibberelin beeing applied in the form of a 1500 ppm, 0.01 M buffer solution of Gibrescol Polfa, given to the paper substrate. The soaking of the seeds in gibberelin solutions and the use of lesser concentrations of GA gave poorer results, however the soaking lead to a more rapid germination, the finał results beeinglower. As effective in breaking dormancy, but requiring more time, were the treatments of predrying and prechilling.
An illumination of the seeds with infrared light, applied in 1-10 doses of one minute resultcd in no positive effcct, even delaying the germination by inducing secondary dormancy, that could be broken again by the use of gibberelic acid. The posibility of taking advantage of the synergetic action of short duration drying at 40°C and of a subsequent gibberelin treatment was shown. The application of a Gibrescol buffer solution of pH 7.0 and phospate concentration of 0.01 M with a concentration of gibberelin amounting to 1500 ppm, shortened the time of germinability assessment by 3 days, as compared with the official methods performed according to ISTA Rules 1976 and the Polish standards PN-69/R-65950.
