Abstract

The response of five new oats cultivars to nitrogen (N) applied in doses of 1.2, 2.4 and 3.6 g/pot was investigated in Mitscherlichs pots in the years 2005—2007. Yield of grain and its components (weight of 1000 grains, productivity tillering, number of spikelets per main shoot panicle, weight of grains per panicle, number of grains per panicle, grain yield of main shoot, grain yield of tiller shoot) were determined. The cultivar Koneser manifested a significant yield increase at the N rate of 3.6 g N/pot. Nitrogen applied at 2.4 g N/pot caused a significant yield increase in cvs. Furman, Rajtarand Stoper. The cultivar Gniady produced similar yields, irrespective of the nitrogen dose. Yield increase was due to the increased productive tillering of an individual plant, which compensated for slight decrease in the weight and number of grains per panicle. The 1000 grains weight of the cultivars under investigation did not respond significantly to the increased nitrogen fertilization.
