Abstract

At the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR), Młochów Research Center, four groups of potato breeding materials were evaluated for the chips colour, a key trait of potatoes dedicated for processing into chips. The research focused on: estimation of genotypic variation for this trait, identification of cold chipping genotypes and parental lines with positive effects of general combining ability (GCA) for chips colour after cold storage of tubers, and estimation of expected responses to selection for chip colour after cold storage (4–5°C) in three families originated from crosses between parents with good chipping quality. The results evidenced that breeding progress in programmes directed to the development of parental lines or cultivars with cold chipping ability may be accelerated by the use of progeny tests for chip colour after cold storage. The use of parental forms with positive GCA effects for this trait increased the frequency of progeny individuals characterized by light chips colour. A high potential to improve cold chipping ability, found in three released parental lines, was proved in progeny test, by the estimates of: σ2g (genetic variance), h2 (heritability in the broad sense), R (expected response to selection).
