Abstract
Breeding work to improve seed productivity of lucerne has been conducted in our country for many years. The aim of the investigations was to analyze the seed productivity and variability of yielding traits of lucerne forms with different length of the productive parts of raceme. Three phenotype groups were separated: shoots with long racemes (‘lp’ forms) that were above 4 cm long; forms typical of lucerne, with a 2–4 cm long productive part of raceme (determine forms and the ones showing prolonged flowering were selected); plants with panicle inflorescence and the length of a raceme of about 2 cm. Plants with the productive part of a raceme exceeding 4 cm in length were characterized by greater number both of pods and seeds per raceme. Plants with a short peduncle (up to 2 cm) set significantly more seeds per pod. Seed yielding of the selected groups was similar, from 1.1 to 1.4 g of seeds per shoot. In all the groups, yield of seeds per plant depended on: variability of a number of seeds per plant, thousand seeds weight, average number of seeds per raceme, number of nodes and number of raceme per shoot. In the tested groups, seed yield per shoot was determined by the variability of a number of seeds per shoot and that of thousand seeds weight.
