Abstract

In 1997–1999 two types of experiments were conducted (without protection and with protection against lodging and diseases) on Polish spring wheat cultivars released from 1925 to 1997. In experiments with protection the genetic progress in grain yields was rated as 25.4 kg/ha/year. This value shows the gains in yield potential. In experiments without protection the progress in resistance to lodging and diseases contributed to the total gains, which amounted to 33.2 kg/ha/year. The progress in grain yield was associated with biomass gains.
