The estimation of variability and correlation of quantitative traits in spring durum wheat collection of Afghan origin

Abstract
A study on 73 spring durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) genotypes obtained from National Germplasm Resources Laboratory USDA, ARS, Beltsville was carried out in 2007–2010. They were local populations originating from Afghanistan, mainly from Helmand, Herat, Kabul, Kandahar provinces. All genotypes were assessed in detail during the four year cycle of field experiment conducted at the Experimental Field Station of the University of Life Sciences in Czesławice near Nałęczów. The following traits were analyzed: number of days from emergence to heading, vegetation period, plant height, spike rachis length, number of spikelets per spike, spike density, number of grains per spike and spikelet, weight of grains per spike, 1000 grain weight and total protein content in the grain. The obtained results indicate a large differentiation of tested materials regarding all analyzed traits, although the number of grains per spike, weight of grains per spike and 1000 grain weight were characterized by highest values of variability coefficients (CV = 15.7%; CV = 23.8%; CV=15.0%). The number of grains per spike and spikelet indicate considerable genotype-environmental interaction, which was proved by insignificant values of correlation coefficients between years. The weight of grains per spike depended mainly on number of grains per spike (rxy= 0.810) and spikelet (rxy= 0.824) and 1000 grain weight (rxy= 0.772). The correlation coefficient of above mentioned trait with protein content in grain was insignificant (rxy= -0.172). However, in analyzed population a lot of genotypes had high and stable in years weight of grains per spike and high protein content in the grain. They can be an interesting initial material in a practical breeding of durum wheat in Poland.
