Abstract
Fusarium head blight is a disease caused by fungi of the genus Fusarium. The disease affects all cereals grown in Poland. The greatest damage is caused to bread wheat crops. The harmfulness of Fusarium head blight results primarily from grain contamination with secondary Fusarium metabolites – mycotoxins. They are harmful to humans and animals when food or feed containing them is consumed. The etiology of the disease is presented in the first part of the work. The Fusarium species that cause Fusarium head blight in small grain cereals were characterized along with the latest systematics of these species. The most important mycotoxins produced by Fusarium were described. The main methods for limiting and controlling Fusarium head blight were also presented
