Abstract
Fusarium head blight is a disease caused by fungi of the genus Fusarium. The disease affects all cereals grown in Poland. The greatest damage is caused to bread wheat crops. The harmfulness of Fusarium head blight results primarily from grain contamination with secondary Fusarium metabolites – mycotoxins. They are harmful to humans and animals when food or feed containing them is consumed. The second part of the paper presents issues related to the resistance of wheat to Fusarium head blight. Types of resistance to the disease were characterized. Resistance genes or quantitative traits loci associated with resistance identified so far were described. For the most important resistance genes, the mechanisms of their action identified so far were presented.
