Abstract
One of the most important factors deciding on winter wheat yielding is sowing date. The literature recommendations concerning optimal sowing time for particular regions are a result of precise field experiments. The present study based on statistical analysis of results of survey research conducted in the years 1992–2003 on 6 241 farms representing variable soil quality and differentiated level of agricultural technology. The data were partitioned into three groups according to the sowing date: before optimal or optimal or after optimal; next they were subjected to analysis of variance and linear regression analysis. The analyses were made separately for all fields, for fields partitioned into three groups of soil quality, for fields with three different levels of NPK fertilization and, finally, for all fields again after calculation of yields unbiased by any measurable effects other than sowing date. The highest yields were obtained at sowing dates earlier than those recommended as the optimal ones. The delayed sowing caused significant decreases of yield. Very high NPK fertilization level compensated the yield losses due to the late sowing. In poor habitats yielding of winter wheat was distinctly lower and the sowing delay caused no significant negative effect on yield.
