Abstract

Combining ability of forty-eight crosses obtained by crossing 12 inbred lines with four testers was investigated in 2004 using factorial design North Carolina Design II. The experiment was carried out using incomplete block design with three replications. The following traits were evaluated: resistance to tillering, resistance to infection with smut, dry matter content and grain yield. GCA and SCA variations were statistically significant for all the traits. Line 1728-5 was characterized by the greatest number of statistically significant and positive effects. The GCA values were higher than the SCA ones for all traits studied. This finding indicates the importance of additive gene action.
