The content of protein in potato tubers fertilized with undersown catch crops in integrated and organic production systems

Abstract

The work presents results of studies carried out from 2006 to 2009. They were undertaken to determine the influence of undersown catch crops, which were either autumn-incorporated or retained on the soil surface till spring as mulch, on total and true protein contents in tubers of potato cultivated in integrated and organic production systems. The experimental factors were as follows: 1. undersown catch crop fertilizer (no undersown catch crop control treatment, farmyard manure, white melilot, white melilot + westerwolds ryegrass, westerwolds ryegrass, white melilot applied as mulch, westerwolds ryegrass + white melilot applied as mulch, westerwolds ryegrass applied as mulch) and 2. production system (integrated, organic). Edible potato immediately followed undersown catch crop fertilization in the field. Potato tubers were sampled to determine total and true protein contents. The highest total and true protein contents were recorded in the tubers of potato fertilized with white melilot and white melilot/westerwolds ryegrass mixture retained on the soil surface until spring as mulch and autumn-incorporated white melilot. Higher total and true protein contents were determined in the tubers of potato grown in the integrated production system than in the organic one.
