Abstract
Red and pink ear rot diseases are the most economically significant diseases of maize. Infection by Fusarium spp. results not only in yield reduction but also in contamination with mycotoxins. Breeding for resistance is the best method to control this disease. Therefore, in the years 2008–2009 ear rot resistance of maize hybrids was evaluated based on the phenotypic symptoms under natural infection in three locations: Radzików, Smolice and Kobierzyce and after inoculation with F. graminearum and F. verticillioides in Radzików and based on the ability to DON and fumonisins accumulation. Under natural infection, in Radzików and Smolice, the levels of the disease and toxins contents were low. In Kobierzyce the level of the disease was higher. After inoculation, the differences between hybrids in ear rot resistance were significant. In 2008 and 2009 correlation between ear rot symptoms and toxins content was positive and significant. Correlations between ear rot resistance and stalk rot resistance were negative. In comparison to the results obtained after silk channel inoculation, results obtained after kernel inoculation more significantly correlated to the results obtained under natural infection.
