Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess and compare a number of other seeds in organic seed material in three phases of production: directly after seed harvest, in seeds prepared for laboratory certification (after cleaning) and after seed certification. The experiment was carried out in the years 2004, 2005 and 2006. Seeds were sampled from organic certified seed crops of spring cereals. In successive years, 9, 11 and 7 samples were analyzed. Two to four cultivars of oats, wheat and barley in each year of harvest were included. The purity, number and botanical composition of contaminated diaspores were evaluated. The samples collected directly after harvest were contaminated by seeds of numerous plant species including restricted weeds and different cereals. The average number of diaspores of other plant species in the samples was as follows: 30 in 2004, 23 in 2005 and only 17 in 2006. The number of species gradually decreased in successive years of the experiment. The number of species recorded for the samples of certified seed was many times smaller than that in the samples collected directly after harvest. The results show that the cereals seed production can be performed successfully in organic conditions, provided that the high requirements of the process are fulfilled. Moreover, a seed production farm must be supplied with a variety of seed cleaning machines and tools.
