Abstract
In 2004–2006, the stability of weight of thousand grains in winter wheat cultivars was estimated based on the results of Post-registration Variety Testing System (PDO) experiments. The study was conducted at five experimental sites differing in edaphic and climatic conditions. Weight of thousand grains in eleven cultivars grown in two cultivation variants was determined. The intensive variant as compared to the standard one , included nitrogen fertilization higher by 40 kg/ha, full chemical control of fungal diseases and application of a growth factor and foliar feeding of the plants with a multi-component nutrient. Significant interaction of the cultivars with the environments indicates that the performance of particular winter wheat genotypes can vary depending on the location. Changing weather conditions in three years of the study, and especially water deficit during the vegetation season of plants, resulted in the decreased stability of weight of thousand grains in the investigated cultivars in the environments of Naroczyce and Tarnów. Stability of thousand-grain weight is a feature largely determined by genetics, but some cultivars show quite high variability of this yield component.
