Phenotypic characteristics of winter oilseed rape volunteers (Brassica napus L.) occurring in northern regions of Poland

Abstract
The occurrence of plants with abnormal morphology has been observed on oilseed rape (B. napus) plantations in the last few years. Simultaneously, the problems with maintaining the quality of raw material for oil industry appear in various regions of Poland. Therefore, the investigations aiming at explanation of this phenomenon have been undertaken. The investigations included 122 volunteers collected from winter oilseed rape fields in the growing season 2005/2006. The plantations were selected in three voivodeships: Western Pomerania, Pomerania and Warmia-Mazuria. The volunteers were divided into two groups: plants with morphotype of oilseed rape and plants with morhotype of turnip rape. The following cultivars of double low winter oilseed rape cultivated in the field of origin of volunteers were chosen as standard: Californium, Castille, Lisek, Rasmus as well as winter turnip rape (B. campestris) Ludowy and Brachina. On the basis of measurement of ploidy level, which was carried out using flow cytometry, average relative DNA content 117.7 was stated for oilseed rape-like plants and for turnip rape-like plants it had an average value 50.8. Plants with turnip rape morphotype were characterized by high erucic acid (mean 39.6%) and high total glucosinolates content (mean 97.5 μmol·g–1 of seeds). Oilseed rape-like volunteers were double low genotypes or older oilseed rape genotypes with high erucic acid content (above 40%) and total glucosinolates content (above 100.0 μmol·g–1 of seeds). These results indicate that the seeds of traditional or low erucic varieties persist for a long time (almost 20 years) in the soil seed bank at the stage of secondary dormancy and these are the source of volunteers polluting plantations of oilseed rape.
