Abstract
Evaluation of determination of cereals yield is important for determining, which yield-related traits influence yield variability, and what criteria should be taken in breeding of high-yielding genotypes. This paper shows the determination of spring barley yield by some yield-related traits. The analyses were conducted using two approaches: simple paths, in which we assume that all traits have direct effects on grain yield, and complex paths, where yield-related traits were divided into primary yield-related traits (which have direct influence on yield) and secondary yield-related traits. The obtained results proved that the approach with simple casual model should not be used when yield-related traits formed at different developmental stages are correlated. Using the simple path analysis the effects of tillering and of a number of plants were not proved, although these traits certainly have significant influence on yield variability. The approach with complex paths appeared to be more useful as it relates to the ontogenetic sequence of forming of particular yield-related traits.
