Abstract
Twenty two flint lines and 21 dent lines of maize were grown in field trials at Smolice and Kobierzyce using incomplete block design. Seeds were sown on 5 m2 plots at 75 × 18.6 cm spacing. The following characters were measured: pollen shed, silking, ear length, no. of rows/ear, no. of kernels/row, no. of kernels/ear, ear weight, cob weight, % dry matter and weight of grain/ear. The measurements of the characters were used to construct three indices: specific, foreign and general. Each index was computed with and without economic weights. In general, both variants of index gave similar rankings of the lines. After incorporating economic weights to the construction of indices the following lines were selected as the most promising: S 50668-4, K 409, S 41798-1-2-2, S 50685, S 47225A. It is concluded that using economic weights in the construction of indices gives a better characterization of inbred lines and is helpful in the choice of parents for a particular cross combination.
