Abstract
The high molecular weight glutenins encoded by the complex loci Glu-1 are the object of interest in breeding of quality varieties in wheat due to their associations with bread-making quality and the possibilities of introgressions. This paper presents the review on both the possibilities of introgressions and the effects obtained so far in improvements of bread making quality by the introgressions of high molecular weight glutenins in cereals. The review showed, that in the cereals the gene Glu-1 introgressions were realized in hexaploid wheat T. aestivum L., diploid rye (S. cereale L.), secondary hexaploid triticale (X Triticosecale Witt.) and hexaploid tritordeum. Some species of diploid wheat (AA) T. monococcum L., T. boeoticum L., and tetraploid (AA BB) T. durum Desf., T. dicoccum Schubl., T. turgidum L., T. dicoccoides Schweinf. and diploid species of the genus Aegilops L., Ae. squarrosa L. (DS DS), Ae. umbellulata Zhuk. (UU), Ae. comosa Sibth. et Sm. (MM), Ae. markgrafii L. (CC) represented the sources of novel HMW-GS genes and were effectively used in bread making quality improvements in cereals. These genes were introduced effectively into wheat cultivars with the use of interspecific and intergeneric generative hybridization with promoted homoeologous chromosome pairing and by the chromosome manipulation that lead to translocations which proved to be the most effective approach. They improved the individual technological parameters but their expressions were modified by the suppression loci of the regulatory systems, mostly of the wheat genome.
