Abstract

The aim of the work was to evaluate germination capacity, vigour and reaction to drought stress of cereal seeds produced under organic system. Moreover, seed storage quality was assessed. Seeds of spring barley, oats and wheat coming from the harvest of 2004, 2005 and 2006 were used. Seed were sampled from the field classified in grade C/1 as organic seed crop. Germination (Zk) and vigour tests were done according to ISTA recommendations. To assess seed vigour, a rate of seed germination and of seedling growth at optimal temperature (like for assessing germination capacity) as well as conductivity of electrolyte leakage as a resultant of seeds micturition were determined. Seed storage quality was evaluated as the percentage of normal seedlings after performing accelerated ageing test (AA-test). Drought stress was simulated by using polyethylene glycol PEG 6000 in order to obtain the following osmotic potentials of water solution -0,2 (S1), -0,4 (S2), -0,6 (S3), -0,8 (S4) MPa. The seed germination capacity of spring cereals produced in organic seed crop ranged from 79% to 93%, and for the prevalent number of cultivars it fulfilled the requirements for certified seed (˃85%). Seed vigour and storage quality evaluated by using the accelerated ageing test were estimated as good for oats and wheat, and as very good for barley. Reaction of seeds to drought stress was different and depended on cereals species and cultivar. Seeds of hull-less oats cv. Polar were found to be less susceptible than seeds of hulled cv. Chwat, or those of wheat or barley.
